Jan 06, 2016 Burn the small stuff After much experience, we can advise that the best fires are built with the smaller logs in your pile. Split firewood that is seasoned (old and dry) makes the best looking and most efficient fire. Use the thinnest pieces to start your fire, and keep adding the thinnest pieces as you go. It works best that way. Once you have a respectable coal bed, the bigger pieces will burn better. Collect the small branches that are piled up in the neighborhood or stand of trees nearby... They burn the best and are free!
